How do you get to Puzzle 9 in Desktop Explorer?
Backtrack from Puzzle 8, enable Hidden Files in Puzzle 1, unlock Puzzle9_Altar with Rubicon.

Desktop Explorer Puzzle 9 guide: how to unlock the gate, spoiler-safe hint, then full solution for the late-game stuck point — verified July 2026.
Reach Altar and stack the stones.
Desktop Explorer Puzzle 9 (Altar) is less about typing a code and more about stacking three flat-stone images after you unlock the Altar folder with Rubicon. Many players search “how do you get to puzzle 9” because the gate is hidden behind backtracking + Hidden Files — not a glowing next-folder button.
Use the hint ladder below if you want to stay spoiler-light, then the full answer when you are done experimenting. Pair with the walkthrough, Puzzle 8 context via walkthrough, and passwords. Verified July 24, 2026 · Steam.
| Need | Where |
|---|---|
| Password Rubicon | stalagmite_formation.img in Puzzle 8 folder |
| Hidden Puzzle9_Altar | Puzzle 1 folder after View → Hidden Files |
| flat_stone_L.img | Puzzle 9 / Altar area |
| flat_stone_M.img | Puzzle 8 folder |
| flat_stone_S.img | Puzzle 6 folder |
| Reward | Auto next folder + ColorLens.exe |
If Puzzle 9 never appears, you are missing the backtrack plant — this is the #1 support question around this gate.
In Puzzle 8, open stalagmite_formation.img and note the password Rubicon. Inspect stalagmite_sanctum.stp and the files inside Puzzle8_following_the_dark (flat_stone_M.img, dead_end.stp).
Use Back until Puzzle 6 — a new image i_kNow_yoU_sAW_ME.img appears. Continue Back to Puzzle 1 for stuck.stp and no_escape.img. Then View → Hidden Files in Puzzle 1 to reveal Puzzle9_Altar.
Double-click Puzzle9_Altar and enter Rubicon. You are now in the Altar section of this Desktop Explorer Puzzle 9 path.
Stay here if you only need a nudge.
Follow this exact stack order when hints are not enough.
| Stone | Folder |
|---|---|
| flat_stone_L | Puzzle 9 Altar |
| flat_stone_M | Puzzle 8 |
| flat_stone_S | Puzzle 6 |
Open 08-16-1998.res into Chronolog, read altar.stp, and inspect mural.img plus flat_stone_L.img while still in the Altar folder.
Keep flat_stone_L.img open. Back to Puzzle 8 for flat_stone_M.img and Puzzle 6 for flat_stone_S.img. Open all three so they overlap / stack on the desktop.
When stacked correctly, Desktop Explorer advances without a keypad entry and notifies you that ColorLens.exe was added. Install it before Puzzle 10 — that gate is unsolvable without the filter tool.
Most Desktop Explorer Puzzle 9 failures are reach mistakes, not stack mistakes.
You skipped Hidden Files in Puzzle 1 after the Puzzle 8 backtrack. Rubicon alone does nothing if the hidden file is still invisible.
You need L + M + S specifically. Random mural images will not auto-advance. Re-open flat_stone files from Altar / Puzzle 8 / Puzzle 6.
After the stack, install ColorLens.exe immediately. Puzzle 10 is a brick wall without it, and players mis-attribute that softlock to Puzzle 9.
Reaching Puzzle9_Altar is half the fight — Hidden Files in Puzzle 1 after Rubicon backtracking.
Stack L/M/S stones from Altar, Puzzle 8, and Puzzle 6; random murals will not auto-advance.
Install ColorLens.exe immediately after the stack so Puzzle 10 does not look broken.
Re-read the newest clue file, confirm you used the intended OS menu, then retry once before opening Discord.
Keep the walkthrough, passwords, and puzzles hub open while you work this gate.
Search demand for desktop explorer puzzle 9 is high enough that a dedicated hint-first article beats burying the answer in a giant walkthrough dump.
After you clear it, mark the password on the passwords list and continue the Profile path without restarting the save.
Backtrack from Puzzle 8, enable Hidden Files in Puzzle 1, unlock Puzzle9_Altar with Rubicon.
Rubicon opens the Altar folder; the stone stack itself needs no typed password.
ColorLens.exe — required for Puzzle 10.
